Data Extraction Modes

Pixel Data Mode

This mode extracts information about individual pixels from the image. Each row in the Excel file represents a single pixel, with data including:

  • Pixel coordinates (x, y position)
  • RGBA color values (red, green, blue, alpha components)
  • Hexadecimal color codes

For large images, you can adjust the sampling rate to extract data from every Nth pixel, creating a more manageable dataset while maintaining representative information.

Color Analysis Mode

This mode analyzes the color distribution in the image, counting occurrences of each unique color and providing detailed information about color frequency and characteristics:

  • RGB and alpha values for each unique color
  • Pixel count and percentage for each color
  • Luminance value for brightness measurement
  • Brightness category (dark, mid-tone, light, very-light)
  • Option to limit output to most frequent colors

Excel's sorting and filtering capabilities make this mode perfect for identifying dominant colors, creating color palettes, and analyzing color relationships.

Metadata Mode

This mode extracts overall information about the image, including:

  • Image dimensions (width, height) and aspect ratio
  • Total pixel count and transparency information
  • Average RGB values and predominant tone
  • Detailed color distribution statistics across RGB channels
  • Luminance distribution across brightness ranges

These metrics provide a comprehensive overview of the image's characteristics, perfect for cataloging, comparing, and analyzing multiple images.

Working with the Generated Excel Files

Data Analysis Tips

  • • Use Excel's filtering to isolate specific color ranges
  • • Create pivot tables to summarize color distribution
  • • Build formulas to find similar or complementary colors
  • • Use conditional formatting for visual data analysis
  • • Generate histograms for color channel distribution

Advanced Applications

  • • Combine data from multiple images for comparative analysis
  • • Create custom color palettes based on frequency analysis
  • • Use Excel's Power Query for advanced data transformation
  • • Build dashboards to visualize image characteristics
  • • Export to other data analysis tools like R or Python

Excel Format Differences

Our tool offers both XLSX and XLS format options, each with different characteristics:

  • XLSX (Excel 2007 and newer): Modern format with better compression, larger row limits, and more features. Recommended for most users.
  • XLS (Excel 97-2003): Legacy format with broader compatibility for older software but more limited features and a 65,536 row limit.

If you're analyzing large images with many pixels, be aware that Excel has row limitations. XLSX can handle up to 1 million rows, while XLS is limited to 65,536 rows. For very large images, use the sampling option to reduce the data size or choose the Color Analysis mode instead of Pixel Data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the maximum image size this tool can handle?

The tool accepts PNG images up to 10MB in size. However, for large images (high resolution), we recommend using the sampling option in Pixel Data mode to extract a representative subset of pixels rather than every pixel. This improves performance and creates more manageable Excel files. Remember that Excel has row limitations (1 million for XLSX, 65,536 for XLS), so very large images may need significant sampling.

How does color-coding work in the Excel file?

When color-coding is enabled, cells containing hex color values will have their background color set to match the actual color value. This creates a visual reference directly in your spreadsheet. The text color automatically adjusts between black and white based on the background brightness for optimal readability. This feature works best in modern Excel versions and may have limited functionality in some spreadsheet applications.

What's the difference between Pixel Data and Color Analysis modes?

Pixel Data mode extracts information about individual pixels, creating one row per pixel (or sampled pixel). This provides detailed spatial information but can generate very large files for high-resolution images. Color Analysis mode focuses on unique colors found in the image, counting their frequency and providing statistics. This creates a much smaller dataset focused on color distribution rather than pixel positions, making it ideal for color studies and palette extraction.

Can I analyze transparent PNGs?

Yes, our tool handles transparency in PNG images. By default, fully transparent pixels are excluded from the analysis to focus on visible content, but you can enable the "Include Transparent Pixels" option to include them. In Metadata mode, we provide statistics about transparent pixels as a percentage of the total image area. Alpha (transparency) values are included in the RGBA data when this option is enabled.

Is my image data private and secure?

Yes, all processing happens directly in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your images are never uploaded to any server, ensuring complete privacy and security for your visual data. The Excel files are generated locally on your device.
