What is Image Metadata?
Image metadata is "data about data" – it's textual information embedded within an image file that describes the image itself. This data isn't usually visible when viewing the picture but contains valuable details about its origin, content, and characteristics.
Common types include:
- EXIF (Exchangeable image file format): Stores camera settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO), date/time taken, camera make/model, lens information, and often GPS coordinates.
- IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council): Contains descriptive information like captions, keywords, copyright notices, creator details, and headlines, commonly used by photographers and news agencies.
- XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform): An Adobe standard that can store data similar to EXIF and IPTC, plus editing history, ratings, labels, and custom information. It's designed to be more flexible and extensible.
- ICC (International Color Consortium) Profile: Defines the color space of the image, ensuring consistent color reproduction across different devices.
- File Properties: Basic information like filename, size, dimensions, and file type.

Frequently Asked Questions
What image formats are supported?
The viewer leverages the `exifr` library, which supports metadata extraction from JPEG, TIFF, PNG (including iTXt, tEXt, zTXt chunks and EXIF/XMP embedded according to standards), HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, and WebP formats. Support for specific formats like HEIC/HEIF/AVIF may depend on your browser's capabilities.
Why is some metadata missing or incorrect?
Not all images contain metadata. It can be stripped during editing, saving, or uploading to certain platforms. Sometimes, metadata might be non-standard or corrupted. The tool attempts to parse known standards (EXIF, IPTC, XMP, ICC), but manufacturer-specific notes (MakerNotes) can be complex and may not always be fully interpreted. These complex MakerNotes are visible in the Raw JSON view but excluded from simplified CSV/TXT exports.
Is my image uploaded to your server?
No. All processing, including metadata extraction, happens directly within your web browser using JavaScript. Your image file is never uploaded to our servers, ensuring your privacy and data security.
Can I edit the metadata with this tool?
This tool is currently a *viewer* only. It allows you to explore and export existing metadata but does not provide functionality to modify or add metadata to images. Editing metadata typically requires specialized software.
What does GPS data tell me?
If an image contains GPS metadata (usually stored in the EXIF section), it includes the latitude, longitude, and sometimes altitude where the photo was taken. This tool displays these coordinates and provides a quick link to view the location on Google Maps. Be mindful of privacy implications when sharing photos with GPS data enabled.
