What is a Color Palette?
A color palette is a collection of colors used in a design project, interface, or artwork. Choosing the right palette is crucial for creating a specific mood, ensuring readability, and establishing brand identity.
This tool helps you quickly explore different color combinations, saving you time and sparking inspiration.
Understanding Harmony Rules
Using harmony rules often leads to more visually appealing palettes than pure randomness:
- Monochromatic: Tints, shades, and tones of a single hue. Creates a subtle, elegant look.
- Analogous: Colors next to each other on the color wheel. Often found in nature, harmonious and pleasing.
- Complementary: Colors directly opposite each other. High contrast, vibrant, and attention-grabbing.
- Split Complementary: A base color plus the two colors adjacent to its complement. High contrast but less tense than complementary.
- Triadic: Three colors evenly spaced. Offers strong visual contrast while retaining balance.
- Tetradic: Four colors forming a rectangle on the wheel. Rich palettes, best if one color dominates.
How to Use
- Adjust Palette Size: Use the slider to choose how many colors (3 to 8) you want in your palette.
- Select Harmony Rule: Pick a rule from the dropdown (Random, Analogous, Complementary, etc.) to guide the generation.
- Generate: Click the "Generate Palette" button.
- Lock Colors (Optional): If you like a specific color, click the 'unlock' icon next to it. It will turn into a 'lock' icon. Locked colors remain when you generate again.
- Copy Values: Click the 'copy' icon next to any HEX or RGB value to copy it. Use the "Copy All HEX Codes" button for the entire palette.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are the 'harmonious' palettes generated?
When a harmony rule (like Analogous or Complementary) is selected, the generator picks a random base color (or uses the first locked color). It then calculates the other colors based on their HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) relationship to the base color according to the chosen rule (e.g., shifting the hue by specific degrees). Small random variations in saturation and lightness are often added for a more natural look.
Can I input my own starting color?
Currently, the easiest way to use a specific starting color is to generate a random palette, find a color close to what you want (or manually adjust one, if that feature were added), lock it, and then regenerate using a harmony rule. Direct input might be added in future updates.
Are the generated palettes always perfect?
While the harmony rules provide a strong foundation, color perception is subjective. The generator provides a starting point – you might still want to manually tweak colors for your specific needs, especially regarding contrast and accessibility. Use the lock feature to keep good colors and regenerate others.
